cwt This is the first in a little series on Money...so today we'll talk about honoring God with our finances.
cwt When you talk about honoring God with your money - is there a first thing that comes to mind...?
Faith Tithing

cwt Faith, what do you understand to be a tithe?

Faith I think a tithe is supposed to be a tenth part of something paid as a voluntary contribution.
blessing I think it means a portion that is given back to God
cwt yes, acknowledge that everything comes from and belongs to God and by giving part back to him, we do that
cwt Does it have to be 10% and where does that concept come from?
Karing Giving is a heart attitude

Karing The Old Testament had that as a law
Faith Yes. That is true.
cwt I think it is a good rule of thumb...
Karing It can be used as a guideline
blessing but don't you think if God owns all things, including our money, that we shouldn't limit it with a number?

cwt Well, there is the concept that "giving abundantly" reaps abundant rewards...

Faith Sometimes people seem to make a big, flashy show of giving...
Karing That I don't believe God wants us to do.
cwt that is true, isn't it. I wonder what God's response is when he sees us give in "pride"
blessing that is so unnecessary, we are not to let the right hand see what the left hand is doing
Karing He cares so much about our relationship with Him
cwt Yeah. It is lots of fun to "give in secret"
Karing That is what giving is about - building a relationship.
cwt I think it has to do a lot with trust in God. When we give, we are saying that we trust God to meet our needs. And it is saying what is more important...

Faith What happens if we can't give 10%, does that mean we don't trust God?
Shey our pastor spoke on that
cwt No. That was my point about 10% - I think what is important is that you give something even when you have only a little --- and sometimes you can't give - and God knows that...
blessing and what did your pastor say Shey?
cwt There is actually a passage in I Corinthians that talks about Paul saying that once the church gave - and now it was their turn to receive...
Faith I wasn't meaning I couldn't give, but I know my husband was a little on edge when he heard this 10% business in church on Sunday. I don't think he quite realized what tithing meant.
Shey he said that you should start small and he felt that it should be a sacrafice and that it should feel that way even if it was little
Karing Some people even in positions of leadership get hung up on the 10% ....
Faith That is good Shey.
blessing for sure, God is far more concerned about our heart and having an open hand with all our resources, out money, out time, our talent
cwt But - I have seen God honor giving (even more or less than the 10%) I think it is the attitude that it displays

blessing yes, good question cwt, prayer is a first response to learning how to give,. ask God where are the needs, how can I best be responsible for what you have entrusted to me?
cwt I think we need to ask for the right attitude too
cwt I've learned more about giving these past two years than ever before
blessing even when you say give to the local church...there are many areas of the local church to consider

Faith It does always seem to feel better to give than to receive.

blessing it is about having an open hand with our finances, and acknowledging that God has entrusted us with all of it
cwt sometimes dealing with money can cause trouble in marriages too
LRD Honoring God with our finances can be a difficult step at first, but very rewarding in the end

blessing finances can cause huge problems in relationships
cwt Yes. Even in tithing or giving anything to God...
Faith I know it would cause trouble in my marriage, if at this point I started giving huge amounts of money. We do try to be generous when the collection comes around but it isn't the amount of money they were talking about in church.
blessing especially for those who are spiritually unmatched...what is your advice?
cwt I think Faith mentioned something on that. So what do you do if you have an unsupportive spouse on this issue?
cwt I think it has to be between you and God & your spouse....
LRD Yes, i believe that it can be a major cause for concern in many marriages. If you an d your spouse do not see eye to eye on this issue, I believe you really need to pray
blessing if we have an unsupportive spouse, I think our job is to win him over to the faith, by honoring him as well as honoring God. If the spouse isn't understanding tithing, then maybe the wife who is the believer can give time or talent
LRD Pray that God will open your spouses eyes to the need to give

blessing for sure, that the Holy Spirit can break through to the spouse and draw hiim to God
Shey and I think there is also the issue of wives submissive to their husbands
cwt Is there ever a time when tithing isn't honoring to God?

LRD Sometimes when my husband has felt led to give a certain amount of money he has prayed for God to lead me in the same direction, and amazingly it has happened
cwt giving with a grudging heart?
Shey the Bible says to have a cheerful heart and if you don't I don't think it impresses God
blessing that is amazing when God answers prayer like that LRD...I have had that same experience
cwt good point shey. One good attitude doesn't outweigh one bad one...
blessing yes and God always knows our hearts
Shey it seems to be pretty plain
LRD I believe that God honors our hearts, so just because we have given the money, unless we have the right attitude I don't think it matters as much. if that makes sense
cwt How do you deal with this aspect if you are really in a difficult place financially...?
cwt like there is no food for groceries...?
Shey He can still use the money but your heart attitude does not reflect the right attitude to Him
LRD I have personally really prayed about that in the past. ANd God provided other ways to give. And he knew it was coming from my heart

blessing well it depends on the financial situation I guess, but we have a responsibility to work and feed our families first, that is Biblical...however if one is living extravagantly beyond their means and not tithing it is obvious that God is not first

cwt but I think "consumerisM" is something to be aware of in this issue. Like when is enough really enough?
LRD Years ago, when funds were a little low. I was cleaning out our closets of old clothes, and I began to pray for God to place on my heart where these clothes were needed. He lead me to an inner city mission that was desperate. I prayed that even though it wasn't money that God would honor it as a gift, and I feel he did
Faith e.g. Some people would feel two cars are excessive and some wouldn't.

cwt Giving is lots more than just money.
blessing yes faith, everyone has their own perspective, and we are only accountable to God on those things
cwt We have some friends that are the most generous people I've ever met...and it is almost never about money
blessing giving is of ourselves, the money is only a portion
cwt they give food, they open thier home to missionaries, clothes, vehicles

Faith That is wonderful.
cwt it is. A real challenge to us. They are missionaries themselves. and live on 1/2 of what we do - yet they are extremely generous.
cwt it is amazing.
blessing wow, what fantastic examples
LRD Our God is a good God, he doesn't want to take our money and leave us without. He just wants us to be willing. But it is a responsibility to make sure we do give, but it isn't all about tithe. However, tithe is important.

cwt no, not at all...that is even more amazing!
blessing for sure, that shows the heart attitude, people can have very little financially and have a huge money problem with jealously
cwt I think so LRD. It is about living the way God wants - and putting emphasis on what He lays on our hearts - and what he has given to us to be responsible for.

cwt true blessing...I've seen the opposite too - people with lots of money being unwilling to give...
blessing but often our wallets show our heart attitude
LRD We have really seen alot of blessings in our lives since we have taken giving more seriously, both with tithe and other things. It is really neat

Faith That is true. A lot of people do worship money. If you have plenty of money people regard you as successful and look up to you. And that is so wrong.

cwt It is hard not to honor someone with lots of money. I think our society tends to do that...Christians included.
blessing great question cwt...definately there are benefits to tithing, that is being obediant and God honors that, but we must be open to more than just the tithe aspect of giving
Faith I guess problems begin when we start to love money. Tithing would certainly keep us from becoming selfish with our money and that would be a blessing.
LRD Yes, I believe that there are blessings. I believe that those who are truly faithful, and have the right heart behind the giving; God does honor. I do not necessarily believe that every believer is meant to be wealthy. But we do seem to reep what we sow

LRD Again I think that God loves a cheerful giver
cwt "reaping and sowing"...quite the concept with money. So what can we reap if we give or don't give?
cwt If we don't give we become selfish, like Laurie said. Consumer driven...?
LRD peace of our hearts is one thing that we can reap
blessing yes good point LRD, peace, and purpose but also God's blessings are always a joy in whatever form they arrive in!

Faith I think the important thing is that we see giving as a privlege and not a burden.
cwt Is it just honoring God or is there something higher?
Faith If nobody gave then the church would not have the money to advance God's Kingdom.
blessing the purpose of giving is to continue to allow God's purposes to thrive here
cwt So the focus is more than just on money and how much...but on what is done with the money?
Shey I think giving is following an example that Jesus gave when he gave is life for us

cwt I think giving takes the focus off of ourselves and our needs and on to God and the reason He gave his life...and why we are here.

Karing It is important to put our focus on

LRD I think that we also have to responsible with the rest of our money too, not just the money that we are tithing, but what we spend the rest on as well. If we are spending our money on things that are not pleasing to God, he is hurt by that
cwt It seems that God allowed money to be part of our lives sometimes to test our loyalties...
Faith That is true. How someone spends their money does say a lot about their character.
cwt "love of money" gets people into lots of trouble...and certainly reveals lots about character...
cwt Can how we deal with money be a "testimony" to our world?
blessing how someone spends their money says alot about what they think about God
LRD We learn these things as we journey through life, sometimes they can be hard lessons to learn

Faith I think we do need to recognize the difference between needs and wants.

LRD Yes I think that how we handle our money is definently a testimony
cwt I think we have to see how God sees 'needs' and 'wants' too....

Faith I go through that with my kids all the time. I have told them just because you want everything, it doesn't mean you need it or that we will buy it.

cwt Right. I often tell our kids "it isn't in the budget right now..."
cwt Have any of you worked on getting your kids to tithe?
Shey no
blessing yes I have
LRD sometimes when we are not sure whether something we "want" is an actual need or not, we do not purchase until we spend time thinking and praying about it. If it isn't a neccesity within a day or two it seems to not be in our heart to but anymore
cwt How'd you teach them?
Faith No. They are not Christians but they did give money when they went to Sunday School.
cwt good point LRD. Waiting is a good thing sometimes...that honors God too - when we are careful to spend wisely.
blessing I just encouraged them to give every once in a while from their babysitting money, at first to the church, then as they got older they began to give to missions on their own
cwt I think showing examples to them by our own giving helps...sometimes something practical helps too...like World Vision or something like that.
blessing also by lifestyle, giving of all resources freely
LRD one way we can teach out kids about giving is when they are very young by just giving them offering for Sunday School. When they are older they can take their offering out of their allowance. But we must sit down and explain why this is done
cwt It is easier to train the kids when they are young... Harder when you are an adult to learn to give....

cwt So much of it seems to be tied to our heart attitude and Love for God

LRD Yes if we start when they are young it will just be a habit
cwt So if you aren't generous by nature, is there ways to develop that?

cwt At least for me, that helped. I obeyed in the giving and God worked on making me willing to give...

cwt God often meets us when we take that first step....in this I think it is giving what we can -
LRD Many times I have wished that we as a couple would have learned that obedience earlier in our marriage, I think it would have saved us some of the harder times we have gone through
cwt yes. Obedience can show up in lots of areas spiritually can't it...very hard to obey sometimes - especially with money.
Faith Should everyone be giving the same amount? The sermon on Sunday said that 10% is the same for everyone no matter how much money you make.

Faith I can't agree with that because 10% wouldn't be the same for two people making the exact same amount of money but with different family situations.
Karing God lays on our hearts what we are to give. That is what we need to be obedient to.

Karing Especially when there is an unbeliever in the family. It could cause a lot of resentment
cwt I think the 10% is the rule of thumb - but generosity is the attitude that is blessed....God would be the one who guides how much to give
Faith For instance, say a single person was making the same amount as husband who has a wife and three children.
blessing sorry girls I have an appointment that I have to get to, this has been stimulating and great depth here! Faith I wouldn't get caught up on the ten percent issue, God is more concerned about the heart than the amount
Karing Perhaps God would have you give in other ways while you don't have money to give.
Faith That single person would find it easier to come up with more money.
cwt I really used to struggle with that when we were struggling financially.

Faith I didn't mean to sound like I was struggling. My husband does make a lot of money.
Faith But it isn't like we have cash like that laying around.

Faith But my husband isn't even a Christian and he came out of there saying if you think I am cutting a cheque for 10% of my income you can forget it.
cwt Yes, faith. with your husband not being saved, I think I'd just let that rest for now....
Karing I would encourage your husband to see this as being this pastor's perspective on tithing
cwt I think the concept of tithing is a stumbling block for lots of new Christians and non-Christians...
LRD I think that you need to find other ways you can give then, and pray that God will work on his heart. The primary concern is his salvation Faith, not his bank account, that will follow in time
cwt especially if they lock in on the 10% thing...

Faith I know. I shouldn't get all stressed out about this but it did kind of turn my husband off.
LRD Maybe you can make casseroles for ill people in the church, or volunteer in the church. If you know someone in the ministry that does not have a lot maybe you can offer child care. There are a lot of ways, just ask God to lead you

cwt To someone who isn't saved, they would have a hard time understanding the tithe principle of things.
Faith You are right. It is just hard for him to go in there and hear a sermon like that because now he thinks they are after his wallet.
LRD yes, my husband and i were both saved when we got married and it took us many years to learn these things and we are still learning

cwt I dont' think he can really understand the principles of giving until the Holy Spirit works in his life. It took me a long time to understand these things too.
Faith That is so true. When that happens then his attitude will change about giving.
cwt We are all on such a journey. Like a tree...grows slowly. Give it time, Faith.
Faith He is a generous person in a lot of ways and even with giving. Just not the amount they were saying.
cwt Giving is just one of the challenges of Christianity - one of the many....
LRD THat is unfortunate, try to explain to him that that is a biblical principle for believers and that you do not expect him to understand. Be very loving and supportive of his being "turned off". I can see his point. Until your heart is there, your wallet wont be. Just love him, and pray
cwt It is hard when someone puts a hard and fast rule on giving. I think it misses the point...
