LIVING A LIFE OF INTEGRITY

“How blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord” (Psalm 119:1).

Those whose way is blameless, Lord? What does that look like? How do I ensure that my walk is blameless? As I paused to reflect on this first verse of Psalm 119, I saw a reference in the margin of my Bible indicating that blameless means "complete" or "having integrity." But what does that look like practically? Here are some thoughts I asked God to apply to my life.

*Integrity involves knowing and applying God’s Word to every aspect of my life! And not just the parts that I want people to see or notice, or only when it is comfortable or popular.

*Integrity means that what I say and do lines up with the truth of the Word. Whether a stranger who comes to my door at an inconvenient time, or the person who steps in front of me in at the check out line, or a driver that cuts me off on the freeway, or a bank teller who is just learning her job, each one is treated with kindness and respect because that’s how the Bible tells us we are to treat others.

*Integrity reflects a life that doesn’t compromise on the truth in word and deed depending on who I am spending time with or who is watching me. And it certainly doesn’t matter if I am totally alone, my words and actions stay exactly the same.

When my son was in university, he lived with four varsity football players. They told him early on that they had met people like him before, people who professed to be Christians and went to church… and they said they'd change that part of his life in short order!

After several weeks one of the roommates asked, “What do you say when you get really mad?” At first my son was a bit puzzled. When he asked for clarification, the football player just said, “Well I have been watching you. And you never swear or cuss. So what do you say when you get really mad?”

You see, whether or not my son knew that one of his roommates was watching or listening, his speech was the same. He didn’t have to suddenly change what he was saying because one of them might hear it and that would reflect badly on the fact that he was a believer.

How about you today? Does your life line up with the truth of God’s Word? Do you treat some people with respect, but others as if they are merely in your way? Are your words and actions the same, regardless of who is with you or watching you?

~ Lord, may I always remember that You truly have asked me to live a life of integrity. What a challenge! Only then will I understand what Your Word says, and I would be blessed because my way is blameless and I am walking in the law of the Lord. Amen.
