THE LONGING OF YOUR SOUL

C. S. Lewis said in 'The Weight of Glory', "it would seem that our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased."

We say we want to know God, but how strongly do we want it? Is it a passion that burns within? Do we seek after Him as for buried treasure? Do we stop everything we are doing in order to meet with Him? Unfortunately my answer is too often no. I get caught up in the stuff involved with living day to day.

Lewis says that though we seek fame or power, they are not what we are truly longing for. Instead, when we come face to face with God we will find that, "The door on which we have been knocking all our lives will open at last." (C. S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory)

All of our desires can and will be satisfied in Jesus. He is the one for whom we are longing.

Why not give up chasing elusive dreams? Seek God himself. Make Him the focus of your day and your desire. Then we can join with Isaiah in saying, "Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts. My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you" (Isaiah 26:8,9).

~ Dear God, I want my whole life to be a longing after You. I want everything I do and say to reflect my desire to know You. Fill me with Your fire and excitement.
